Colleen Connally hasn’t released a book in quite a while…but it’s coming! September 27FRAMED will be released. Book Two in Boston’s Crime of Passion promises murder, mayhem and passion!

Blood makes you related; Murder makes you family!

Riley Ashcroft discovers that being born into one of the most prominent and powerful families in Massachusetts doesn’t mean a life of ease. Far from it. Since her father, Jack Ashcroft, took his own life thirteen years ago, she has lived in the shadow of scandal. When her grandmother’s personal secretary is brutally murdered, Riley begins to suspect everything she has been told as a child was a lie. Feeling betrayed, she vows to expose her family’s darkest secrets.

Josh Kincaid, an investigative reporter, is on the heels of a major story. Thirteen years ago, Harrison Taylor’s fate lay in the hands of his lawyer, Jack Ashcroft. In the midst of rumors and scandal, Ashcroft committed suicide and Taylor’s fate was decided. Taylor is a convicted killer, but his grandmother has never stopped believing in his innocence. Now, the woman of meager means has offered a reward for any information that will free her grandson. Kincaid’s interest is peaked, but it isn’t until an anonymous tip suggests that the convicted killer was framed that he takes on the case.

Determined that the sins of the past be revealed, Kincaid and Riley search together for answers to the questions that were silenced by Jack Ashcroft’s death. But there is a killer out there that has already proven he will do whatever necessary to keep those secrets buried.

In this tale of deceit and twisted revenge, the two soon realize that no one can be trusted, not even each other…

Sports Illustrated Cover Shoot- Boston Marathon!

What a great morning! Got up early and went up to Boston for Sports Illustrated Cover Shoot. I got an email from work that invited everyone from the hospital to come down for the picture. Sports Illustrated is going to make the picture its cover. So technically I guess I’ll be on the cover!

It was touching to be down at the finish line at the spot where the first bomb went off. The front row of the picture had some of the survivors, Mayor Walsh and former Mayor Menino, first responders… My husband and I had a wonderful time in the middle of other Bostonians. The whole of Boston was invited on the news. We were standing by other hospital employees from across Boston, marathon runners, and Bostonians that came to support the city. Some brought their children. I have to say I haven’t been around small children in a while. I love the way children look at the world. Matter of fact, our marker for the picture is a little boy wearing an orange sweatshirt sitting on his father’s shoulders.

After the picture was taken, my husband was in seventh heaven because the Red Sox World Series trophy was also being displayed. They allowed everyone to take their picture with it. Made my husband’s day! One little girl was upset that she wouldn’t be able to see herself on the cover. So I promised her I would post her on the blog. Here it is Aspen-

aspen  Everyone deserves their momentespecially showing their support for the Boston Marathon, the runners, the victims, and everyone that enjoys the day. The tragedy served to bind us together and helped us remember our neighbor. Boston is more than a city. It is a community. We care for our own.

Also, there were lovely scarfs being given out to marathon runners and first responders for the marathon. I was fortunate to happen to be given one because I work at one of the hospitals that cared for the victims. Six thousands scarfs were made from all over the country…91ZpmFSoQcL._SL1500_

Boston is a wonderful city. I’m so happy to be a part of this community. I’m also so happy to be giving half my royalties of Fragmented to The One Fund.

CLASSIC ROMANCES REVISITED

I was thinking whether classic books would be published today? This isn’t a new topic, but I wanted to take a moment and go into a publishing house and listen to what they might say about the classic romances today.

So just for fun. I want to sneak in and read a few imaginary rejection letters…

Let’s start with the classic Gone With the Wind.

613P468QfGL._SL1000_

Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell is one of my favorite books. So if Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With the Wind today, would it get published?

SeriouslyI could just see the letter Ms Mitchell would receive…

While I see promise in your work, you do understand romances have to have a happy ending. Having the hero slam the door in the face of the heroine and swear at her doesn’t qualify. Could you edit the ending? And while you editinghaving Melanie die is quite sad, could you work on that as well? Andwell I don’t want to say anything but the book seems to be quite racist, maybe Prissy could be Scarlet’s friend who just happens to want to wait on Scarlet hand and foot…

Onto Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Oh, I know what you’re thinking, you can’t touch Jane Eyre. Let’s just read on to the rejection letter…

Ms Bronte, while impressed by the storyline you have created, I do so love that the governess got her man! But I do have a few issues that I believe will enhance your chances at success. It’s this plain Jane heroine. How on earth do expect the readers to connect with a woman who isI do so want to be kindbut let’s be honestshe’s not pretty. Our readers want a tall, slim woman kinda like Heidi Klum. Why don’t we rework the heroine just a tad…

Next just for fun…

Return of the King by J RR Tolkien

Dear Mr. Tolkien, I have to politely decline. While I understand you believe you have written an epic fantasy, it’s not what we would consider a romance. Even in your romances you have within the book, we have a few issues. First have you ever heard of the alpha malehe needs to be front and center at all timesnot too much gorebut having Eowyn kill the witch-kingahno. Can’t have that. Needs to be the alpha male. And while we are talking about alpha males, why on earth do you have that meek little Frodo destroy the ring? Come onhe’s too short!

FinallyRomeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Dear Mr. ShakespeareI almost didn’t write back to you. I cannot believe that you intend to publish this. Seriously!!! You need some major rewrites to your ending. I happen to have a couple of suggestionsdon’t have your hero and heroine die for starters! But if you insist on their deathsyou have to have them come back as vampires, werewolves or perhaps zombiesthey are all the rage now….

Am I wrong? What do you think? Romance is a different kind of genre for a reason!

LOVE OUR ROMANCES…

READ AN EBOOK WEEK!

I changed my websiteagain. I love roses. They are my favorite flowers. They have been since I was a child and helped my grandmother in her rose garden. Been thinking of her lately. Been thinking a lot.

For the last few weeks, I have been dealing with health issues. It’s been a long, harsh winter, but to me it has given me time to put my life in perspective once more. We all need to do that occasionally. Learn to live one day at a time. I’m on the way to recovery, but I think it’s going to take time catch up with things.

One thing that I got to do, though, was read. I love to read. I read some really good books while I was ill. When I’m writing, I fall behind on reading. It’s what this week is about- READ AN EBOOK! I started Carmen DeSousa’s Southern Suspense Series, and readElaine Raco Chase’s Double Occupancy, and Vanessa Kelly’s Confessions of a Royal Bridgegroom.

So I hope that everyone will find some great books this week and enjoy them. I’m hoping the cold weather will begin to turn warmer.

Remember WINDS OF BETRAYAL BOXED SET  is still only $.99 until the end of Monday night.

Challenges of Writing

I believe I have been fortunate when it comes to writing. Becoming an Indie writer has given me opportunities I have never had. Before I became an Indie, I was in a never-ending cycle of writing my bestseller, hoping when I sent off a query and regrouping after the rejection came.

I had my share of glowing rejections, but in the end, I don’t think I would have broken through the BIG Five barrier. I would have stayed with the small/medium publishers, like my Tides of Charleston Series is at the moment, and have my books do basically nothing. The problem with small/medium publishers isn’t the publishers themselves. My experiences with my publishers have been positive and I learned so much. I can’t express my gratitude enough to Wild Child Publishing for taking my first book. BUT a small/medium publisher doesn’t have the revenue to promote you and all the rest of their books the way your book needs to be promoted. There is a huge sea of books out there. It’s difficult to make yours stand out. Moreover, you don’t have control of your book. So if you wanted to lower the price of your book for a promotion, you can’t. Your publisher has to do that.

You can write the best book ever and if it’s not promoted, it will do nothingabsolutely nothing. There is so much working against you in this business. One of my major problems is that I’m not a business person—far from it. All I have ever wanted to do was write, but I have found that writing your book is the easy part.

When I was out there with my query letters, I know one of my issues with being rejected is that I never followed the standard formula in writing. Publishers like a certain style. I write outside those lines. I like to think of it as being an original. I have had a major gay secondary character in a standard historical romance novel. I’ve had my hero do the unthinkable and lie to the love of his life. I’ve had a female who was the heroic one. When I write a true serial, don’t be surprised to find I leave readers with cliffhangers. And for all of you who were upset with The Cry For Freedom ending so abruptly- leading to the next book, you should read Whispers of a Legend. It’s funny. My readers with Whispers of a Legend seem to love the books ending in a cliffhanger because it meant the story will continue. Not so much with some of the readers of the Winds of Betrayal series. (But I’ve been told that some readers find reading Winds of Betrayal Series is like watching a television series.)

I know I’ve gone around to world to make a point. All I ever wanted was people to read my books. Being an Indie has allowed me to put my books out there. For better or worse, this is me. I have always felt my books are an extension of myself. This is my imagination at work. This is how I see the world.

AND…I want to take a moment to say thank you.

In my writing career, I have found I have moments. This is one of my moments and I so appreciate them.

FRAGMENTED, Book One of the Boston’s Crimes of Passion is #32 in Amazon’s Suspense and #35 in Romantic Suspense at the time of this writing.

fragmentedstandard

Fragmented is close to my heart. Yes, I poured my heart and soul into the book, but I did so to give back to my community. It hasn’t done as well as I had hoped since its release. But once more, that goes back to getting it out there for the readers. I thought I didn’t have to give away the first book in a series to have it sell. Nope. That didn’t work. It’s in a different genre than what I usually write. So I went back to KDP Select. I gave Fragmented away for one day and then went to $.99. It was fortunate to have been featured with Free Partay when it was free and then Ereader News Today when it went to $.99.

It won’t stay up in the rankings because it needs to stay in the limelight and I haven’t figured out how to do that yet, but I am happy that people are now reading Fragmented. I believe it’s one of my best books so far.

So—THANK YOU!  You made my day. I’ve got to go. I just got home from work. Long commute home- 2 hours in the snow storm. It was funny walking out to my car today because it reminded me of a scene in Fragmented… Anyhow, hope you have a wonderful day-snow or no snow! Have a good one!

Saying Goodbye to 2013

Here’s to 2013! Looking back over the year, I had my best year in sales to date.

I released three more books, Broken Legacy, Seductive Lies and Fragmented under Colleen Connally.

464c9-brokenlegacy-rpt

I had my first #1. Broken Legacy hit Amazon paid #1 Historical Romance!

We were all shocked by the Boston Marathon Bombing. I was deeply touched. I made a pledge that I kept. I wanted to do more than just give a donation. So I’m going to give half my royalties from my latest release, Fragmented, to The One Fund. I encouraged everyone to remember not only the victims of the bombing, but the victims of any disaster. My heart goes out to the mid-west tornado’s victims and well as the disaster in the Philippines. There are so many good causes to donate. I choose the bombing victims because I live and work in Boston.

Looking forward to 2014! I’m going to be releasing Seductive Secrets as an audio book! I’m excited about it. I’m having such a wonderful time listening to each chapter. I get excited to see more chapters come in. It’s bad, isn’t it? I mean I wrote the book. I know what’s going to happen. Yet, I can’t wait to listen to the next chapter. Audio books are addictive! I absolutely love the narrator, too. I could listen to her read all day!

One of the things I’m working on this coming year is trying to figure out how to encourage readers to leave reviews when they enjoy not only one of my book, but any book they enjoy. Reviews are the lifeblood of an author’s work.

I know I treasure a good review!
