Social Media: What’s Working- Hashtags

I like easy and simple when connecting to Social Media. First let me say, I need help understanding some Social Media- Tumblr, Stumbleupon, Reddit… I’m on them. Just don’t know how to use them to their full advantage. So if anyone does, please let me know.

So I have confessed I’m not an expert, but I can tell you what I like and what I don’t.

I used to love Facebook. Now, I’m rarely go on Facebook. I lived off Novel Works…loved to promote myself and others there. Now, Facebook charges for your fanpage to go out to others, even those that ‘like’ your page. It doesn’t stop anyone from dropping by, but it certainly put a damper on how it used to work. I have tried to promote by Facebook. I haven’t found any benefit for a writer…at least for me. What I had always used Facebook for was exposure, getting your book out there in front of the public. I am not happy with what Facebook has done… Maybe somebody else has had a different experience. I still like the way you can catch up with friends and family, but as for promotions…not so much.

Twitter is popular. I’m a huge of twitter. It’s simple and easy, quick and to the point. Another reason I like Twitter- HASHTAGS. Even if you tweet doesn’t go out to a certain person, they can pull it up with the hashtags. Here’s some hashtags I use for promotions take in account your own genre and book.

What are some HASHTAGS that work for you? What social media are you most comfortable with? Do you make up your own Hashtags?

So want to connect to me:

Saying Goodbye to 2013

Here’s to 2013! Looking back over the year, I had my best year in sales to date.

I released three more books, Broken Legacy, Seductive Lies and Fragmented under Colleen Connally.

I had my first #1. Broken Legacy hit Amazon paid #1 Historical Romance!

We were all shocked by the Boston Marathon Bombing. I was deeply touched. I made a pledge that I kept. I wanted to do more than just give a donation. So I’m going to give half my royalties from my latest release, Fragmented, to The One Fund. I encouraged everyone to remember not only the victims of the bombing, but the victims of any disaster. My heart goes out to the mid-west tornado’s victims and well as the disaster in the Philippines. There are so many good causes to donate. I choose the bombing victims because I live and work in Boston.

Looking forward to 2014! I’m going to be releasing Seductive Secrets as an audio book! I’m excited about it. I’m having such a wonderful time listening to each chapter. I get excited to see more chapters come in. It’s bad, isn’t it? I mean I wrote the book. I know what’s going to happen. Yet, I can’t wait to listen to the next chapter. Audio books are addictive! I absolutely love the narrator, too. I could listen to her read all day!

One of the things I’m working on this coming year is trying to figure out how to encourage readers to leave reviews when they enjoy not only one of my book, but any book they enjoy. Reviews are the lifeblood of an author’s work.

I know I treasure a good review!

I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Holiday Season.
Putting everything on the back burner for a few days. It’s time for family and friends. My family is doing things a tad different this year. My mother-in-law has Alzheimer’s. We usually have Christmas Eve over at my in-laws with my husband’s family, but this year my father-in-law isn’t up for that. So we’re on our own for Christmas Eve. Now for Christmas, it will be the same. I cook. The only time of the year I really cook is Christmas. We are having everyone over at our house, which should be a great time. Looking forward to Christmas dinner.
Now there is a void on Christmas Eve. So we start a new tradition… New isn’t bad. It’s just different. The most important thing is that I’m going to get to enjoy another year with all my kids and hubbie.
My favorite commercial this year is the Apple commercial where the teenage boy goes around filming his family during the holidays. Heart warming.
Take a moment and make a memory. I think this year it has hit me that not everything will stay the same. My husband’s mother…my mother…both are dealing with health issues. My son moved out of state this year. My daughter wants too to…
So I realize that it’s important to stop and enjoy this moment.
My Christmas present to you is SEDUCTIVE LIES! I’ve made it .$99 for a few days—only on AMAZON.

Don’t forget to get a copy of Fragmented. You get a great book to read and know that half of the proceeds will go to a charity!

The Challenges of Writing!

A few years ago between my historical suspense romances, I sat down and wrote a contemporary murder mystery. Writing a contemporary mystery story wasn’t a giant leap for me. In my historical romances, there has always been a mystery behind my stories. I have never written a simple romance.

The challenge for me with Fragmented was coming back into the present. When you write, you submerge yourself into that world. One would think it would be easier to write a contemporary story than a historical, but for me, I’m an old soul. A contemporary mystery presented itself with its own obstacles, but I look at a mystery like a puzzle. I love puzzles.

When I decided to start this series, Boston’s Crimes of Passion, I went back to my Fragmented manuscript. It needed revising. I tweaked the story and the characters until I was satisfied. I believe you will find Fragmented has everything you want in a thriller—action, danger, and mystery.

When I began writing Indie, I made the decision to give the first book in my series away for free. I did it with Whispers of a Legend, Secret Lives and Winds of Betrayal. The purpose behind giving a book away is letting a reader get a feel for your writing, become a fan and buy the rest of your books. Some writers absolutely refuse to give a book away. It’s hard to give a book away, but for me, it has worked.

edca0003-300colleenconnally (1)whisperspartonecryforfreedom (2)

With Boston’s Crimes of Passion, I chose not to give away Fragmented. I have a desire to give back to my community. So with Fragmented, I’m giving a portion (half) of my royalties to help the Boston Marathon Victims!

I’m excited about Fragmented! It’s got great feedback. The first reader’s blog reviews came in from THE BOOKWORM’S BLOG.

Fragmented is the perfect read for all those mystery/thriller lovers out there. It is a page turner that will have you guessing until the very end. The plots twist will have you doubting every character and their intentions. I would suggest you read this book when you have nothing to do the next day because you will absolutely not stop reading this until you find out what happens.

It took me until the 5th chapter to really get into the story. I think it was because the point of view of the story kept changing every time you got into one person’s story. But, I promise you it all comes together in ways that will blow your mind. The author is donating half of all royalties made from the book to a charity in Boston as mentioned in the “About The Author” section in the back of the book. (Yes it’s that good I literally read it cover to cover!)

LOTS AND LOTS OF GIVEAWAYS! So join me for the fun!

I have come up with SIX of reducing the holiday stress this year. Hope it helps you!

First one— Laugh!

Laugh! I would tell a joke, but the way I tell a joke is worse than a six-year old. You know what I’m talking about. You’ve seen others blow a joke. A sure sign is catching their breath a couple of times while they’re in the middle of the joke, while they are building the suspense. Then busting out laughing before the punch line. Yeah, that’s me.

Of course, there is the other extreme. The jokester who tells every detail and backs up when he forgets one (and he will forget one). By the time the punch line comes you’ve forgotten what he was even talking about. Then you have this dead air between you when he stops talking and you’re standing thinking of your grocery list for your Christmas dinner. That’s my husband.

I have an odd sense of humor. I love the jokes that are so stupid they’re funny. Case in point—one of my favorite movies when my kids were little was Spaced Invaders. I still laugh when I hear “Prepare to die earth scum!”  I feel the same way about the movie, Airplane. Not so much Dumb and Dumber or even The Hangover. For my husband, I don’t even have to ask what was one of his favorite funny movie. Ghostbusters! I swear he knew everyone word of the script. “Ray, Ray, Come in Ray!”

As for tv show, my favorite comedy was Modern Family. I still love it, but I watched Trophy Wife the other day online. Honestly, I didn’t think I would like it, but I couldn’t stop laughing.

Second one- Eat Chocolate!

No explanation needed.

2013-01-30 15.20.18Third One— Take a walk with your dog!

Now this suggestion is interesting. For me, talking Colbie for a walk causes more stress, but for most people taking time out in the fresh air with your loyal companion is enjoyable. It’s my fault that walking my dog is stressful. That’s because I have no control. My dog walks me. We see anything and everything she wants and at her pace. My daughter reprimands me all the time. Says I need to be the ‘pack leader’…I think she’s watched Dog Whisperer a little too much. Colbie and I are just fine.

Fourth one—  Take time off from work in the middle of the busy week.

You know you need to with the list you have, especially this year. There is only a short window of opportunity to shop. My children are older. So I can get by with gift cards and online shopping, but I have a few on my list I have to get gifts that I need to see to make sure its the right gift. It means battling the stores if you do it on the weekend. Mid-week—mid-day!

Fifth one— Relive a Memory!

Take time to remember your past. It made me smile just writing that line. You remember how you felt the night before Christmas. There is power in believing. The excitement and joy that the holidays held for you as a child. Waking up on Christmas morning and seeing if Santa came. He always did and he always bought me a doll. I was happy as long as I had that doll. I also loved Christmas Eve with all the cousins. Then Christmas day, the other side of the family would come. My grandmother. God Bless her. I can still see her so clearly. But I believe remembering good times warms the heart.

Sixth one-  Give!

It doesn’t have to be money. It can be time. Volunteer. Do a kind deed. Give encouragement.

So— I’m going to relieve some stress. I’m going to GIVE.

I have a few things going this holiday season. Over on GOODREADS I’m doing a giveaway. I’m giving away 5 signed copies of Fragmented at the end of the month. All you have to do is click a button to enter for your chance to win a signed copy!
