I have come to the conclusion I need a warning label on the books of my Winds of Betrayal Series. Is Winds of Betrayal a series or a serial?
A series by defintion is a group or a number of related or similar things, events, etc., arranged or occurring in temporal, spatial, or other order or succession; sequence. (taken directly from Dictionary.com)
A serial by definition is anything published, broadcast, etc., in short installments at regular intervals, as a novel appearing in successive issues of a magazine.(noun) published in installments or successive parts: a serial story. (adjective) (Again taken directly from Dictionary.com).
Without question Winds of Betrayal is a series. The question becomes is it also a serial. I had also thought of a serial as short stories if combined together would make a novel. But if you use the word serial as an adjective, then I guess you can say the books are a serial.
There are two types of series. A collection of books that can stand-alone. Books you can read without having to read the others to fully understand the book. An example of my one stand-alone series- SECRET LIVES: Seductive Secrets, Broken Legacy, and Seductive Lies. The books are connected by the heroines having to live secret lives at some point.
The other series I have written are all connected books. Winds of Betrayal, Tides of Charleston, and Whispers of a Legend. Coming later this year, I will release the Southern Legacy series…it is a serial. I’m taking a book I wrote a few years ago, Whispers of a Southern Heart, and am breaking it down into at least three books, probably four. I’m aiming to have each book be around 50,000 words. Southern Legacy will include: Belle of Charleston, Shadows of Magnolias, Born to Be Brothers and if there is a fourth, The Sun Will Rise. Southern Legacy will come with a warning label:
THIS IS A SERIAL! THE BOOKS MAY HAVE CLIFFHANGERS AND HOOKS TO MAKE YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TO READ THE SERIES. DO NOT BEGIN IF YOU DON’T WANT TO ADDICTED TO THE CHARACTERS AND STORYLINE!
So should Winds of Betrayal carry a warning label of its own? That I can’t answer for everyone. Should readers realize that Winds of Betrayal is NOT a Stand-alone series? I believe there are a few hints that lean to conclusion that it is an ongoing storyline.
First line of The Cry For Freedom’s blurb:
A rousing family saga for the fight for America’s independence!
There are four books in the series with the same characters. There will be a fifth to conclude the series and the American Revolution- Set Fire to the Rain has a tentative date of late 2015.
Eventually, I will bundle all the books under one cover. At the moment, my bundle only holds the first three books. I have released the fourth, The Heavens Shall Fall, since I bundled the first three together.
