I have come up with SIX of reducing the holiday stress this year. Hope it helps you!
First one— Laugh!
Laugh! I would tell a joke, but the way I tell a joke is worse than a six-year old. You know what I’m talking about. You’ve seen others blow a joke. A sure sign is catching their breath a couple of times while they’re in the middle of the joke, while they are building the suspense. Then busting out laughing before the punch line. Yeah, that’s me.
Of course, there is the other extreme. The jokester who tells every detail and backs up when he forgets one (and he will forget one). By the time the punch line comes you’ve forgotten what he was even talking about. Then you have this dead air between you when he stops talking and you’re standing thinking of your grocery list for your Christmas dinner. That’s my husband.
I have an odd sense of humor. I love the jokes that are so stupid they’re funny. Case in point—one of my favorite movies when my kids were little was Spaced Invaders. I still laugh when I hear “Prepare to die earth scum!” I feel the same way about the movie, Airplane. Not so much Dumb and Dumber or even The Hangover. For my husband, I don’t even have to ask what was one of his favorite funny movie. Ghostbusters! I swear he knew everyone word of the script. “Ray, Ray, Come in Ray!”
As for tv show, my favorite comedy was Modern Family. I still love it, but I watched Trophy Wife the other day online. Honestly, I didn’t think I would like it, but I couldn’t stop laughing.
Second one- Eat Chocolate!
No explanation needed.
Now this suggestion is interesting. For me, talking Colbie for a walk causes more stress, but for most people taking time out in the fresh air with your loyal companion is enjoyable. It’s my fault that walking my dog is stressful. That’s because I have no control. My dog walks me. We see anything and everything she wants and at her pace. My daughter reprimands me all the time. Says I need to be the ‘pack leader’…I think she’s watched Dog Whisperer a little too much. Colbie and I are just fine.
Fourth one— Take time off from work in the middle of the busy week.
You know you need to with the list you have, especially this year. There is only a short window of opportunity to shop. My children are older. So I can get by with gift cards and online shopping, but I have a few on my list I have to get gifts that I need to see to make sure its the right gift. It means battling the stores if you do it on the weekend. Mid-week—mid-day!
Fifth one— Relive a Memory!
Take time to remember your past. It made me smile just writing that line. You remember how you felt the night before Christmas. There is power in believing. The excitement and joy that the holidays held for you as a child. Waking up on Christmas morning and seeing if Santa came. He always did and he always bought me a doll. I was happy as long as I had that doll. I also loved Christmas Eve with all the cousins. Then Christmas day, the other side of the family would come. My grandmother. God Bless her. I can still see her so clearly. But I believe remembering good times warms the heart.
Sixth one- Give!
It doesn’t have to be money. It can be time. Volunteer. Do a kind deed. Give encouragement.
So— I’m going to relieve some stress. I’m going to GIVE.
